Civil War veteran Ben Warren (Rock Hudson) decides that he has had enough of all the violence around him, so he plans to live out the rest of his life in peace in the New West with his fiancee (Donna Reed). Unfortunately, his new-found pacifism is put to the test when his bride-to-be is kidnapped by bandits, and the brigands find that there is only so much a man will put up with before showing his violent side.
